VETERANS GOLF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
(Formerly South Australian Veteran Golfers' Association Inc)
Mr Bill Sidwell, Secretary of the AVGA held talks with Harry Macklin-Shaw about creating a veteran golfers association for golfers in South Australia aged 55 and over. In the meantime, the AVGA headed by Bill elected to separate from the Association and form a commercial operation. The Australian Veteran Golfers’ Union (AVGU) was established and state Administrative bodies were set up and became affiliated with the AVGU.
In 1979, Mr Harry Macklin-Shaw, then President of The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide instigated a meeting of interested parties who met at The Grange Golf Club in November 1979.
Consequently, an inaugural meeting was held at The Grange Golf Club at 9.30am on the 30th November 1979 attended by 28 representatives from 11 golf clubs, Mr Sidwell, Mr W O’Reilly from Dunlop Slazenger, and A Clark from the SA Golfer magazine. The meeting agreed to create The South Australian Veteran Golfers’ Association, which was formed in 1980 and incorporated in 1981 (Incorporation No. 7491).
The inaugural Committee was:
President H H Macklin-Shaw
Vice President A LePage
Captain M Warner
Vice Captain M E Dale
Secretary J Scandlers, Treasurer W Nicks,
General Committee J Howard, C Moncur, G Foreshew, G Cooper
National Delegates H H Macklin-Shaw,M Warner
AFFILIATED DIVISIONS
Over the period from 1979 to 1996, 9 Divisions were invited to become affiliated with the Union via the SAVGA.
Divisions were established as under:
Yorke Peninsula - 9 March 1982 (Note separation to South and North in 1989)
Mid North - 10 January 1984
Lower Murray and Hills North - 19 June 1985
Northern - 19 June 1985
Lower South East - 20 February 1989
Northern Yorke Peninsula - 19 May 1989
Southern Yorke Peninsula - July 1990
Southern - 25 November 1991
Lower Murray & Hills - March 1995
McLaren Districts - 23 March 1996
Riverland - September 1997
Over time, the SAVGA became loosely named “Metro” to distinguish it from affiliates when playing matches involving other groups (e.g. the Interzone Challenge between the SAVGA, Lower Murray & Hills, McLaren and Southern Divisions) and against Mid North for the Ray Jennison Shield.
Adelaide Metro - March 2009
Adelaide Plains & Barossa - 2010
In 1996, to allow affiliated Divisions to have a voice in the running of veteran’s golf in South Australia, the SAVGA initiated an annual Delegates meeting, and this evolved into the current SAVGA structure. That is, in 2009 following consultation with representatives from the Affiliated Divisions, the SAVGA was reconstituted with delegates from each affiliated Division represented at the Annual General Meeting as members of the SAVGA Committee. The inaugural meeting of this new composite Association was held in the Committee Room of the Riverside (now West Lakes) golf club in Feb 2009 where a new Constitution was agreed and registered under the Act and was allocated a new Incorporation Number A40233. The former SAVGA membership was also reconstituted and renamed as the Adelaide Metropolitan Division Veteran Golfers’ Association and incorporated in the same year. Our Metro Incorporation No. is A 7491.
In 2019 the SAVGA was renamed Veterans Golf South Australia.
